Honest expectations

Mottled is a personal mood-tracking app provided as-is, without warranty. It is not a medical or therapeutic tool, and nothing in it constitutes mental-health advice.

You are responsible for the content you log. Don't try to break the service, scrape it, or use it in a way that's unkind to other users (although it's mostly just you).

The service may change or shut down at any time. If that happens, we'll give you a way to export your entries.

Weather data

If you turn on weather tracking in Settings, Mottled asks where you log from. We store the city name you choose, plus its latitude and longitude rounded to four decimal places (around 11 metres of precision — enough for daily weather, far less than raw GPS) and your timezone. We never read your device location.

We use those coordinates to fetch the local daily weather from Open-Meteo, a free weather API that doesn't require an account. The condition, mean temperature, and sunshine hours for each day you've logged get attached to that day's entry. Mottled also asks Claude Haiku (Anthropic) to write a short two-or-three-sentence summary of how your moods line up with the weather. The summary is generated from your aggregate counts only — no notes, no individual entries — and is cached for the day.

Turning weather tracking off from Settings clears your saved location and removes the weather we'd already added to your past mood entries. Your moods themselves stay. If you delete your account, all of this goes with it.
